The story unfolds on the S.S. American, sailing from New York to London in the early 1930s. Billy Crocker, a Wall Street broker, is hopelessly in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to the stuffy British nobleman Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.

Determined to win her heart, Billy stows away on the ship, setting the stage for a series of farcical events and mistaken identities. Reno Sweeney, a glamorous nightclub singer and former evangelist, becomes Billy’s ally, along with the hapless gangster Moonface Martin, also known as “Public Enemy #13.”

Together, they navigate a whirlwind of disguises, misunderstandings, and comic situations to help Billy pursue Hope, with memorable tunes such as ‘I get a kick out of you’, ‘You’re the Top’ and ‘Blow, Gabriel Blow’.
